In this series, we spotlight inspiring women at Hikma, sharing their career journeys and employee testimonials. Through insights, experiences, and leadership advice, they offer a powerful glimpse into life at Hikma and the values that drive their success.

Q: How did your career at Hikma begin?

After graduating in biotech, I joined Hikma in 2002 as an analyst in the chemistry lab. I was responsible for analysing raw materials, water, and finished products. Just a few months in, a restructuring in the Quality Control (QC) lab opened a new opportunity in a freshly formed Quality Assurance (QA) department. I was invited to join, and I said yes without hesitation.

That role was a turning point. I began building procedures, learning validation processes, and understanding systems from the ground up. At the time, we were a small team, around 100 people, so I had the chance to be hands-on, to learn deeply, and to contribute meaningfully. I often gave up personal time to accelerate my own learning, and that’s an investment I feel that paid off. Soon I was asked by our plant director to present my work to the wider team, and I was invited to join a new project that would help Hikma Portugal go through a new phase of growth.

Q: How do you approach new challenges?

My mindset has always been to say yes. I never shy away from new projects or unfamiliar territory, because every challenge is a chance to grow. That attitude has pushed me to stretch my capabilities and take on responsibilities that have shaped my career.

One example was my involvement in launching our ampoule line. I managed all aspects of the project, from protocol development to cross-functional team training, gaining visibility into every aspect of manufacturing. That experience gave me a broader understanding of our operations and helped me build strong relationships across departments.

As I progressed into a supervisor role and later became Validation Manager, I continued to stay close to the teams and the work on the ground. Whether building new lines or supporting facility expansions, I’ve always embraced the opportunity to learn, contribute, and grow alongside the company.

Q: Would you consider Hikma as a good employer for opportunities?

Hikma is a company that truly offers global opportunities. I’ve worked on compliance and quality systems for our injectables business across Morocco, Algeria, Egypt, and the US. I’ve also supported our German facility in Thymoorgan, where I spent three months helping integrate our quality standards and preparing the site for its first FDA inspection.

Each project has been a life lesson. I’ve learned to adapt, to lead in different cultural contexts, and to bring people with me on the journey. It’s incredibly rewarding to see the company grow and to know I’ve helped others grow with it.

Q: What are some of the most important lessons you’ve learned?

One of the biggest lessons is that leadership isn’t ‘one size fits all’. What works in Portugal might not work in Germany or the US. I’ve learned to adapt my communication and leadership style to different cultures and teams. Building trust is key, when people know they can count on you, they’re more engaged and productive.

I’ve also learned the value of continuous learning. I’ve read, trained, and prepared myself to always find a way forward. That mindset has helped me overcome challenges and grow as a leader.

Q: How important is mentorship in your journey?

Mentorship is essential. I’m proactive by nature, and I always double-check when I have doubts, but having mentors has made a huge difference. Young professionals need guidance and inspiration, and I believe in being open and supportive. I’ve had great mentors myself who helped shape my path. Now, I see it as my responsibility to pay that forward.

Q: What keeps your passion alive for the work you do?

At my core, I’ve always loved science and engineering. I once dreamed of being a paediatrician, and in a way, I’ve found a path that still lets me contribute to better health. Ensuring the quality of our medicines means ensuring the wellbeing of patients, and that’s deeply meaningful to me.

I also find joy in teaching and mentoring others. Watching people grow, learn, and succeed is one of the most fulfilling parts of my job.

Q: What’s your favourite part of your role today?

Being part of a team that I help, support, and watch grow. That’s what drives me every day.

Q: How has Hikma changed since you started?

When I joined, we were a small team. Today, Hikma is a global company with a strong presence across continents. I’ve had the privilege of growing with it, helping build new lines, supporting the setup of new buildings, and new teams. Through it all, the spirit of innovation, collaboration, and our purpose has remained the same. And that’s what makes this journey so special.
