Sustainability governance

We believe that considering social and
environmental considerations and effective
sustainability governance into our overall
strategy will contribute to the long-term
value we create. It is central to our purpose
of putting better health within reach,
every day.

We combine sustainability into our overall business model and strategy in a number of ways:

  • Our values-driven approach ensures we conduct our business ethically and with integrity

  • Our financial approach includes the aim to pursue efficiency throughout the business

  • Inspiring and enabling our people is a key pillar of our business strategy

  • We seek partnerships and collaboration with civil society, governments and others to achieve common objectives and create shared value.

More information on our strategy and business model is available in our 2019 annual report.

Our sustainability strategy is overseen by our Compliance, Responsibility and Ethics Committee (CREC) to ensure it receives attention at the highest level of the business. CREC is one of four Board-level committees and is chaired by an independent, non-executive director. The Committee is comprised of four independent, non- executive directors and the Executive Vice-Chairman. The vice president CSR and Sustainability is responsible for the sustainability strategy and reports directly to CREC.

In addition to reviewing and approving sustainability policies, CREC also responsible for policies that require ethical judgement. It oversees our compliance team and Code of Conduct, including our anti-bribery and corruption compliance programme. It also sets the overall response to ethical and sustainability-related risks and supervises our ‘Speak Up’ whistleblowing process for raising ethical concerns. The Chair of the Audit Committee is a standing member of CREC, ensuring connection between the other Board committees with risk oversight.

We take a cross-functional approach to sustainability at Hikma. We collaborate with any functions around the business, including engineering teams to develop our environmental approach, health and safety and human resources teams for employee-related issues, and the teams responsible for compliance and risk. CSR champions – employees who dedicate part of their time towards sustainability – coordinate community activities at all of our facilities.

We take an inclusive approach to determining which sustainability issues are most relevant to our company, incorporating the views of all of our stakeholders.

A healthier world that enriches all of our communities
