Environmental and energy management certifications
Over the past few years, we have been committed to reducing our environmental impact and energy consumption. We have attained ISO 14001 certification for our environmental management at all our manufacturing facilities in Egypt and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and at our General Formulation Plant in Jordan. In 2015, we were the first pharmaceutical company in the Middle East, and the first Jordanian site, to obtain ISO 50001 certification for energy management. We received the accreditation in recognition of our dedication to improving energy management at our manufacturing operation in Jordan.
Reducing our greenhouse gas emissions
Our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are significant to our organisational sustainability. As such, we monitor emissions at each of our facilities and capitalise on opportunities to improve our environmental performance and energy efficiency.
CDP Reporting: Monitoring and managing our emissions and water usage
We aim to limit our environmental impacts by monitoring and reporting extensively on our energy and water consumption. Part of our strategy to drive better use of resources is through our participation in the CDP, a global framework for disclosing use of water, energy and forestry. Every year, we have expanded the scope of our reporting, and in 2017 achieved scores of ‘B’ for disclosure of our water use and ‘C’ for our disclosure of climate change.
Hikma does not undertake pre-clinical research, but on very rare occasions, is required by regulatory authorities to conduct animal testing as part of new drug development. Where animal testing is required by regulatory authorities, we outsource only to partners who adhere to our high ethical standards. We are committed to the three Rs: reducing the number of lab animals required by improving existing methods of testing; refining existing methods; and replacing to find alternative methods.
